I can see why many readers were put off by it and why it’s viewed as one of his minor novels (it has less than 5k readers on Goodreads compared to Stargirl‘s 100k and Maniac Magee‘s 50k): There’s a darkness and coarseness to the book. Loved, loved, loved it for its injured soul and complicated characters and simple imagery. I checked out the book and read it that night.Īnd I loved Eggs. The blurb on the back promised an “uneasy friendship” between two interesting characters, and something about the book’s low-key style intrigued me. I’ve read some Jerry Spinelli in the past - definitely a few books when I was in elemenatry and middle school, and I caught up with Maniac Magee last year. I was walking through the Young Adult section of the local library, when my eye caught Eggs.
